10 Seconds of Silence

The concept of Ubuntu emphasizes the belief that we are who we are because of others. It focuses on community and interdependence; on collective benefit rather than individual gain.

This acceptance speech by Fred Rogers as a great example of taking intentional effort to honor the contributions of those who have helped us along our way.

“All of us have special ones who loved us into being. Would you just take, along with me, 10 seconds to think of the people who have helped you become who you are, those who cared about you and wanted what was best for you in life. 10 seconds, I’ll watch the time. Whomever you’ve been thinking about, how pleased they must be to know the difference you feel they have made.”

Take some time to think of the ones who have helped you to become the person you are today.

I'm a Social Justice Educator and Aspiring Humanitarian who is interested in conflict resolution, improving intergroup relations, and building more equitable and inclusive communities. "Notes from an Aspiring Humanitarian" is my blog, where I write about issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice. By exploring social identities through written word, film & video, and other forms of media, I hope to continue to expand and enrich conversations about social issues that face our society, and to find ways to take social action while encouraging others to do so as well in their own ways.
