“How Black Hair Matters”

“It’s amazing that it’s considered revolutionary to wear my hair the way it grows out of my head.”—Tracie Thoms

Here’s a discussion from the Melissa Harris Perry show that continues the conversation about the politics of Black hair, including some of the challenges African-American women & girls can face in defining themselves and their realities against societal standards.

While this particular conversation largely looks at the issue through the experience of African-American women and girls, I know that this issue also impacts the experiences of African-American men and boys.

To read about my some of my own experiences with navigating through the sea of negative connotations that can be attached to black hair, the see my Note: Re: “Can I touch it?”: The Fascination with Natural, African-American Hair.

I'm a Social Justice Educator and Aspiring Humanitarian who is interested in conflict resolution, improving intergroup relations, and building more equitable and inclusive communities. "Notes from an Aspiring Humanitarian" is my blog, where I write about issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice. By exploring social identities through written word, film & video, and other forms of media, I hope to continue to expand and enrich conversations about social issues that face our society, and to find ways to take social action while encouraging others to do so as well in their own ways.
