Songs For The Movement: Say Her Name

The Songs For The Movement section of N.A.H. houses selected protest songs for social justice from the past and the present.

Today’s entry in Songs For The Movement is “Say Her Name” by Abby Dobson.

“The #SayHerName Movement responds to increasing calls for attention to police violence against Black women by offering a resource to help ensure that Black women’s stories are integrated into demands for justice, policy responses to police violence, and media representations of police brutality.”

I'm a Social Justice Educator and Aspiring Humanitarian who is interested in conflict resolution, improving intergroup relations, and building more equitable and inclusive communities. "Notes from an Aspiring Humanitarian" is my blog, where I write about issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice. By exploring social identities through written word, film & video, and other forms of media, I hope to continue to expand and enrich conversations about social issues that face our society, and to find ways to take social action while encouraging others to do so as well in their own ways.

Music and song have always been a key to resistance. Here is one that is a classic in Hawaii:

    • Thanks Mike! Not only can music and song tell the story, but they can energize people as well. They have a way of disarming people and grabbing their attention. Music and song can entertain and inform when the lyrics provide much needed social commentary. They are critical tools for resistance for sure!

Thank you for sharing this song!
