Today’s entry in Songs for the Movement is “We’re a Winner” from Curtis Mayfield in 1971.

This submission comes from Textured Conversations‘ own  Sunya Folayan with the message:

“This is one of my favorite songs, if you do not have it in your collection. . Notice the two versions of the song, and how much the song resonates with the audience in this live version. It truly was an at the time. There was so much Black pride. I see a resurgence of sorts today.   “Right On! ”

Curtis Mayfield was ahead of his time, and his genius and social conscience is missed today. Another voice gone far too soon.

The Wikipedia article discusses the song, and also lists other songs that may be of interest.

I really enjoy your blog and the great work you are doing.”

I'm a Social Justice Educator and Aspiring Humanitarian who is interested in conflict resolution, improving intergroup relations, and building more equitable and inclusive communities. "Notes from an Aspiring Humanitarian" is my blog, where I write about issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice. By exploring social identities through written word, film & video, and other forms of media, I hope to continue to expand and enrich conversations about social issues that face our society, and to find ways to take social action while encouraging others to do so as well in their own ways.
