White Savior Trailer

I recently facilitated a workshop on the cycle of socialization where I talked about how films and other forms of media contribute to the white savior complex. I came across this video shortly after I left.

I recognize that an attempt at a comedic take on this might not land well for everyone, but the critiques highlighted in the video capture many of the comments that were in the room during our discussion.

I'm a Social Justice Educator and Aspiring Humanitarian who is interested in conflict resolution, improving intergroup relations, and building more equitable and inclusive communities. "Notes from an Aspiring Humanitarian" is my blog, where I write about issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice. By exploring social identities through written word, film & video, and other forms of media, I hope to continue to expand and enrich conversations about social issues that face our society, and to find ways to take social action while encouraging others to do so as well in their own ways.

So good. I simultaneously laughed at the b.s. of the White people in that video and recognized some of my own behavior I need to put in check at the same time (embarrassingly). This would be good to show at schools for social workers for those of us who need to be extra mindful of when we may think we’re just trying to do the “right thing” without recognizing any of the self indulgent or need for validation motivation that may be at the core (or at least present amongst the other more intentional work). Been following your blog for quite awhile and always sharing your posts with others.
    Take care.
