“The Slavery Detective of the South”

A Vice News Story. Here’s a description from Michelle Alexander

“This is a fascinating and disturbing investigation into forms of slavery that endured in the South into the 1960s. Take 20 minutes and watch the whole video.

One of the stories that struck me involves a black man who is currently living impoverished on the property of a white family that effectively owned his family for generations. He insists that the white family loves him and he won’t say a word against them. Of course, he has reason to fear losing his home if he says the wrong thing but I also got the sense that he wants to believe that he’s loved.

When the camera turns to the white man who has supposedly been “like family”, the truth about white benevolence and charity – after centuries of stolen lives and labor – suddenly comes into view. This isn’t ancient history. The past is present still.”

"Notes from an Aspiring Humanitarian" is my blog, where I write about issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice. By exploring social identities through written word, film & video, and other forms of media, I hope to continue to expand and enrich conversations about social issues that face our society, and to find ways to take social action while encouraging others to do so as well in their own ways.
